HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
It is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 (T-helper) cells, which help protect you from infections.
Key Points About HIV
HIV weakens the immune system over time, making it harder for the body to fight off infections and diseases. If not treated, HIV can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), the most advanced stage of the infection. There is no cure, but effective medicines (ART – Antiretroviral Therapy) can control the virus and allow people with HIV to live long, healthy lives. HIV is not spread through casual contact like hugging, shaking hands, or sharing food.
How HIV Spreads
HIV can be transmitted through: Unprotected sexual contact with an infected person Sharing needles or syringes From mother to baby during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding Transfusions of contaminated blood (rare due to screening)
