Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive neurological disorder that mainly affects movement. It occurs when nerve cells in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra are damaged or die, leading to a decrease in dopamine—a chemical that helps control smooth and coordinated muscle movements.
