Two more people have died in Kerala due to amoebic meningoencephalitis. The deceased are a three-month-old infant and a 52-year-old woman. Both were undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital.
The infant, child of a couple from Omassery, Kozhikode, had been under treatment at the hospital for the past month and was on a ventilator for 28 days. Preliminary investigation suggests that the infection was contracted from well water. Lab tests confirmed the presence of amoeba in the water. The death was confirmed around 11 p.m. yesterday.
The 52-year-old woman, Kanneath Ramla from Cherur Kappil, Kunnamangalam, Malappuram, had been undergoing treatment for one and a half months. She first sought treatment on July 7 after symptoms appeared. Initially treated at private hospitals in Tirurangadi and Vengara, she was shifted to Kozhikode Government Medical College on August 4 as her condition worsened. Tests there confirmed amoebic meningoencephalitis. She was admitted to the emergency ward, later shifted to the general ward when her health improved. However, her condition deteriorated again with fever and vomiting, leading to her death early yesterday morning.
