Health Minister Veena George stated that strict action will be taken against those responsible in the incident where a tube got stuck in the chest of a young woman during surgery. The minister also said that an expert committee has been appointed to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter. Sumayya, a native of Kattakkada, lodged a complaint with the health department pointing out the surgical error.
In 2023, the young woman underwent thyroid removal surgery at Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital. Later, she experienced phlegm congestion and breathing difficulties, for which she continued treatment at the same hospital for two years. In 2025, an X-ray at a private hospital revealed that a guide wire was stuck in her chest. A subsequent examination at Sree Chitra Hospital found that the wire had fused with a blood vessel and could not be removed. The woman further stated in her complaint that the doctor who performed the surgery had withdrawn from responsibility.
ശസ്ത്രക്രീയയ്ക്ക് ഇടയിൽ യുവതിയുടെ നെഞ്ചിൽ ട്യൂബ് കുടുങ്ങിയ സംഭവത്തിൽ കുറ്റക്കാർക്ക് എതിരെ കർശന നടപടിയുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് ആരോഗ്യമന്ത്രി വീണാ ജോർജ്ജ്. സംഭവത്തിൽ വിശദമായ അന്വേഷണം നടത്താൻ വിദഗ്ധ സമിതിയെ നിയോഗിച്ചതായും മന്ത്രി പറഞ്ഞു. കാട്ടാക്കട സ്വദേശിനി സുമയ്യയാണ് ശസ്ത്രക്രീയയിലെ പിഴവ് ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി ആരോഗ്യവകുപ്പിന് പരാതി നൽകിയത്. 2023ൽ തിരുവനന്തപുരം ജനറൽ ആശുപത്രിയിൽ തൈറോയിഡ് നീക്കം ചെയ്യുന്നതിനുള്ള ശസ്ത്രക്രീയയ്ക്കാണ് യുവതി വിധേയ ആയത്. തുടർന്ന് കഫക്കെട്ടും ശ്വാസ തടസ്സവും അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടതിനെ തുടർന്ന് ഇതേ ആശുപത്രിയിൽ രണ്ടുവർഷം ചികിത്സ തുടർന്നു. പിന്നീട് 2025 സ്വകാര്യ ആശുപത്രിയിൽ നടത്തിയ എക്സറേ പരിശോധനയിലാണ് നെഞ്ചിൽ ഗൈഡ് വയർ കുടുങ്ങിയതായി കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. പിന്നീട് ശ്രീചിത്ര ആശുപത്രിയിൽ നടത്തിയ പരിശോധനയിൽ വയർ രക്തക്കുഴലുമായി ഒട്ടിച്ചേർന്നതായും നീക്കം ചെയ്യാൻ സാധിക്കില്ലെന്നും കണ്ടെത്തി. ഇതോടെ ശസ്ത്രക്രീയ നടത്തിയ ഡോക്ടർ കയ്യൊഴിഞ്ഞെന്നും യുവതി പരാതിയിൽ പറയുന്നു.
