Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, commonly caused by viral infections, but it can also result from alcohol abuse, toxins, certain medications, or autoimmune diseases. There are several types of viral hepatitis—A, B, C, D, and E—each with different modes of transmission and severity. The liver plays a vital role in filtering toxins, processing nutrients, and fighting infections. When it’s inflamed, its ability to perform these functions is impaired. Symptoms of hepatitis can range from mild to severe and include fatigue, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, and nausea. Chronic hepatitis, especially types B and C, can lead to serious complications such as liver cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer if left untreated. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial for preventing long-term damage.
