Amoebic Meningoencephalitis is a rare but serious brain infection caused by a free-living amoeba, most commonly Naegleria fowleri. This infection usually occurs when contaminated water enters the nose and the amoeba travels to the brain, leading to inflammation of the brain and its surrounding tissues. Symptoms often begin with headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting, followed by stiff neck, confusion, seizures, and in severe cases, coma. The disease progresses rapidly and is often fatal if not treated promptly. It is most commonly associated with swimming in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, or poorly maintained swimming pools. Preventive measures include avoiding contaminated water sources and ensuring proper chlorination of swimming pools.
