A new study published in Cell Journal concludes that COVID-19 did not originate from a lab leak, but likely spread through the wildlife trade. Researchers from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine report that the virus most likely originated from animals sold at wet markets in Wuhan. The SARS-CoV-2 virus, believed to have originated in western China or northern Laos, traveled nearly 2,700 kilometers before emerging in central China. Since horseshoe bats—the primary carriers—cannot travel such distances, researchers believe the wildlife trade enabled the virus to reach humans.
