For the third consecutive year, leptospirosis (rat fever) has been reported as the infectious disease causing the highest number of deaths in the state. So far this year, the disease has claimed 391 lives. Health experts have warned that the 6.8 percent fatality rate is a matter of serious concern. In 2024, the number of deaths stood at 394.
Two major changes in the pattern of disease spread have been observed in Kerala over the past four years. A disease that was once limited to certain regions has now spread across the entire state. Additionally, a disease that was mainly seen during the monsoon season has now become a year-round endemic illness affecting all seasons.
The bacterium Leptospira, which causes the disease, can be destroyed using antibiotics such as doxycycline and penicillin. Doxycycline can also be used for preventive treatment. PCR tests are available for the early diagnosis of the disease. Health experts point out that delays in diagnosis and treatment are the primary reasons for deaths caused by leptospirosis.
തുടർച്ചയായി മൂന്നാംവർഷവും സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് ഏറ്റവുമധികം മരണത്തിനിടയാക്കിയ പകർച്ചവ്യാധി എലിപ്പനി എന്ന് റിപ്പോർട്ട്. . ഈവർഷം ഇതുവരെ 391 മരണങ്ങൾക്ക് ഈ രോഗം വഴിവെച്ചു. 6.8 ശതമാനം മരണനിരക്കുണ്ട് എന്നത് ഗൗരവമായി കാണണമെന്ന് ആരോഗ്യവിദഗ്ധർ വ്യക്തമാക്കി. 2024-ൽ 394 മരണങ്ങളായിരുന്നു. രോഗവ്യാപനത്തിന്റെ കാര്യത്തിൽ കേരളത്തിൽ നാലുവർഷത്തിനിടെ പ്രകടമായ രണ്ട് മാറ്റങ്ങളുമുണ്ടായി. ചില പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ മാത്രം കണ്ടിരുന്ന രോഗം സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് എല്ലായിടത്തും വ്യാപിച്ചു. പ്രധാനമായും മഴക്കാലത്ത് കണ്ടുവന്നിരുന്ന രോഗം എല്ലാ കാലാവസ്ഥകളിലും കാണുന്ന സ്ഥിരംരോഗമായി മാറി. രോഗം പരത്തുന്ന ലെപ്റ്റോസ്പൈറ എന്ന ബാക്ടീരിയയെ ഡോക്സിസൈക്ലിൻ, പെൻസിലിൻ തുടങ്ങിയ ആന്റിബയോട്ടിക്കുകൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നശിപ്പിക്കാനാകും. ഡോക്സിസൈക്ലിൻ വഴി പ്രതിരോധിക്കാനുമാകും. രോഗം പെട്ടെന്ന് നിർണയിക്കാൻ പിസിആർ പരിശോധനകളുമുണ്ട്. രോഗനിർണയത്തിലും ചികിത്സയിലും വരുന്ന കാലതാമസമാണ് എലിപ്പനി മരണത്തിന് പ്രധാന കാരണമായി ആരോഗ്യവിദഗ്തർ പറയുന്നത്.
