The rising number of people infected with Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (Amoebic Brain Fever) in the state has raised concern, as coliform bacteria have been detected in water bodies. Coliform bacteria have also been found in wells. Health and local self-government department officials stated that recent tests in several areas where infections were confirmed have detected these bacteria. Experts point out that the presence of coliform bacteria could be one of the factors contributing to the spread of amoebic brain fever.
In October alone, 54 people in the state were infected, and eight deaths were reported. A survey conducted three years ago had found excessive levels of coliform in 70% of the state’s drinking water sources. The contamination was traced back to toilet waste, and data indicates that the situation has not improved since then.
സംസ്ഥനത്ത് അമീബിക് മസ്തിഷ്‌കജ്വരം ബാധിക്കുന്നവർ ഏറുമ്പോൾ ആശങ്കയായി ജലാശയങ്ങളിലെ കോളിഫോം ബാക്ടീരിയയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം. കിണറുകളിലടക്കം കോളിഫോം ബാക്ടീരിയ കാണപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. അടുത്തിടെ രോഗബാധ സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ച പലസ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും നടത്തിയ പരിശോധനയിൽ ഇവയെ കണ്ടെത്തിയതായി ആരോഗ്യ, തദ്ദേശ സ്വയംഭരണ വകുപ്പ് അധികൃതർ വ്യക്തമാക്കി. അമീബിക് മസ്തിഷ്‌കജ്വരം വ്യാപിക്കാൻ കോളിഫോം ബാക്ടീരിയകളുടെ സാന്നിധ്യവും ഒരു കാരണമായി വിദഗ്ധർ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നു. ഒക്ടോബറിൽ മാത്രം സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് 54 പേർക്കാണ് അമീബിക് മസ്തിഷ്‌കജ്വരം ബാധിച്ചത്. എട്ടുപേർ മരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. മൂന്നുവർഷം മുൻപ് നടത്തിയ പരിശോധനയിൽ സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ 70 ശതമാനം കുടിവെള്ളസ്രോതസ്സുകളിലും അമിത അളവിൽ കോളിഫോം ഉള്ളതായി കണ്ടെത്തിയിരുന്നു. ശൗചാലയമാലിന്യങ്ങൾ തന്നെയാണ് ഇതിനു കാരണമായി കണ്ടെത്തിയതും. ഈ സ്ഥിതിക്ക് ഇപ്പോഴും മാറ്റംവന്നിട്ടില്ലെന്നാണ് കണക്കുകൾ വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നത്.
