₹17 lakh financial aid for nurse who lost mobility due to Nipah infection.
The Kerala state government has extended support to Tito Thomas, a nurse who lost his mobility after contracting the Nipah virus in 2023 while caring for an infected patient. An amount of ₹17 lakh was handed over to Tito’s family from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. Tito, a native of Mangaluru, was working as a nurse in the emergency department at Iqra Hospital, Kozhikode. In August 2023, while attending to a Nipah patient, he too contracted the virus. Although he recovered and returned to duty, his health worsened again in December, and he was later diagnosed with Nipah encephalitis, which left him immobile. His parents and sibling moved to Kerala to support his treatment. For the past 21 months, Tito has been under treatment, with his parents holding onto hope for his recovery. Tito’s parents said they never expected financial assistance of ₹17 lakh as non-Malayalis. They also expressed gratitude to the hospital authorities for providing free treatment and a monthly stipend of ₹10,000, as well as to the Trained Nurses Association for their continued support. They added that Tito has shown some signs of improvement after months of care, which gives them hope.
2023ൽ നിപ ബാധിതനെ പരിചരിക്കുന്നതിന് ഇടയിൽ വൈറസ് ബാധയെ തുടർന്ന് ചലനശേഷി നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട നഴസ് ടിറ്റോ തോമസിന് സംസ്ഥാന സർക്കാരിന്റെ കൈത്താങ്ങ്. മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയുടെ ദിരതാശ്വാസ നിധിയിൽ നിന്നും 17 ലക്ഷം രൂപ ടിറ്റോയുടെ കുടുംബത്തിന് കൈമാറി. മംഗളൂർ സ്വദേശി ആയ ടിറ്റോ കോഴിക്കോട് ഇഖ്‌റ ആശുപത്രിയിൽ അത്യാഹിത വിഭാഗത്തിലാണ് നഴ്‌സായി ജോലി ചെയ്തിരുന്നത്. 2023 ഓഗസ്റ്റിൽ നിപ ബാധിതനെ പരിചരിക്കുന്നതിന് ഇടയിൽ ടിറ്റോയ്ക്കും വൈറസ് ബാധിച്ചു. രോഗമുക്തി നേടി വീണ്ടും ജോലിയിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ചെങ്കിലും ഡിസംബറിൽ ആരോഗ്യ നില വീണ്ടും മോശമായി. തുടർന്ന് ചലനശേഷി നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട യുവാവിന് നിപ എൻസഫലൈറ്റിസ് സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് ചികിത്സ ആരംഭിച്ച മകന് താങ്ങായി മാതാപിതാക്കളും സഹോദരനും കേരളത്തിലെത്തി. 21 മാസമായി ചലനമറ്റ് ചികിത്സയിൽ കഴിയുന്ന മകൻ തിരിച്ചുവരുമെന്ന പ്രതീക്ഷയിലാണ് മാതാപിതാക്കൾ. മലയാളികളല്ലാത്ത തങ്ങൾക്ക് 17 ലക്ഷം രൂപയുടെ സർക്കാർ ധനസഹായം കിട്ടുമെന്ന് പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നില്ലെന്ന് ടിറ്റോയുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കൾ പറയുന്നു. മകൻ കിടപ്പിലായത് മുതൽ ആശുപത്രി അധികൃതർ സൗജന്യ ചികിത്സയും പ്രതിമാസം 10000 രൂപയും നൽകിവരുന്നതായും പിന്തുണയുമായി ട്രെയിൻഡ് നഴ്‌സിങ് അസോസിയേഷനും ഒപ്പമുണ്ടെന്ന് മാതാപിതാക്കൾ പറഞ്ഞു. മാസങ്ങൾ നീണ്ട പരിചരണത്തിനൊടുവിൽ ടിറ്റോയിൽ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ കണ്ടുവരുന്നതായും, ഇത് പ്രതീക്ഷ നൽകുന്നതായും മാതാപിതാക്കൾ വ്യക്തമാക്കി.
