District Medical Officer Dr. K.K. Rajaram has announced that free preventive vaccination against Japanese Encephalitis will be provided from January to children aged between one and fifteen years in Kozhikode district. The vaccination will be administered through schools, anganwadis, and health centres across the district. The DMO has urged all parents to ensure that their children receive the vaccine.
Japanese Encephalitis is a serious viral disease transmitted through mosquitoes and affects the brain. It mainly affects children. Since there is no effective treatment once the disease develops, prevention is of utmost importance.
Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, vomiting, behavioural changes, epileptic symptoms, weakness of limbs, and loss of consciousness. The disease is transmitted to humans through Culex mosquitoes, which breed in contaminated water. The virus reaches mosquitoes from pigs, cattle, and certain migratory birds, and is then transmitted to humans.
Health experts state that at least 30 out of every 100 infected people die due to the disease, while another 30 percent are forced to live with lifelong disabilities. Maintaining environmental hygiene and ensuring timely vaccination of children are crucial steps in preventing the disease.
ജപ്പാൻ മസ്തിഷ്കജ്വരത്തിനെതിരെ ജനുവരി മുതൽ കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയിലെ ഒരു വയസ്സിനും 15 വയസ്സിനും ഇടയിലുള്ള കുട്ടികൾക്ക് സൗജന്യ പ്രതിരോധ കുത്തിവെപ്പ് നൽകുമെന്ന് ഡി.എം.ഒ ഡോ. കെ.കെ. രാജാറാം. ജില്ലയിലെ സ്കൂളുകൾ, അംഗൻവാടികൾ, ആരോഗ്യ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ വഴിയാണ് കുത്തിവെപ്പ് നൽകുക. എല്ലാ രക്ഷിതാക്കളും കുട്ടികൾക്ക് വാക്സിൻ നൽകുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തണമെന്നും ഡി.എം.ഒ വ്യക്തമാക്കി. കൊതുകുകൾ വഴി പകരുന്നതും തലച്ചോറിനെ ബാധിക്കുന്നതുമായ ഗുരുതര വൈറസ് രോഗമാണ് ജപ്പാൻ മസ്തിഷ്ക ജ്വരം. പ്രധാനമായും കുട്ടികളെയാണ് ഇത് ബാധിക്കുന്നത്. രോഗം പിടിപെട്ടാൽ ഫലപ്രദമായ ചികിത്സ ലഭ്യമല്ലാത്തതിനാൽ പ്രതിരോധത്തിന് വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്. കടുത്ത പനി, കഠിനമായ തലവേദന, ഛർദി, സ്വഭാവ വ്യത്യാസം, അപസ്മാര ലക്ഷണങ്ങൾ, അവയവങ്ങൾക്ക് തളർച്ച, അബോധാവസ്ഥ തുടങ്ങിയവായാണ് ലക്ഷണങ്ങൾ. മലിനജലത്തിൽ മുട്ടയിട്ട് വളരുന്ന ക്യുലക്സ് കൊതുകുകൾ വഴിയാണ് രോഗം മനുഷ്യരിൽ എത്തുന്നത്. പന്നി, കന്നുകാലികൾ, ചിലയിനം ദേശാടന പക്ഷികൾ എന്നിവയിൽനിന്ന് രോഗാണു കൊതുകുകളിൽ എത്തിയാണ് രോഗമുണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്. രോഗം ബാധിച്ച 100 പേരിൽ 30 പേരെങ്കിലും മരിക്കുന്നു. 30 ശതമാനം പേർക്ക് ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവൻ വൈകല്യങ്ങളുമായി ജീവിക്കേണ്ടിയും വരുമെന്നാണ് ആരോഗ്യവിദഗ്തർ പറയുന്നത്. ഇതിനെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കുന്നുന്നതിനായി പരിസര ശുചിത്വം പാലിക്കുകയും കുട്ടികൾക്ക് കൃത്യസമയത്ത് വാക്സിനുകൾ നൽകുകയും ചെയ്യണ്ടത് പ്രധാനമാണ്.
