A stroke is a serious medical emergency that occurs when the blood flow to a part of the brain is blocked or reduced. This stops the brain tissue from getting enough oxygen and nutrients, causing brain cells to die within minutes.
🧠 Types of Stroke
1. Ischemic Stroke (about 85% of cases) Caused by a blood clot or blockage in a brain artery. Often results from fatty deposits (plaques) building up in blood vessels — known as atherosclerosis.
2. Hemorrhagic Stroke Occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts or leaks, leading to bleeding inside or around the brain.
Often linked to high blood pressure, aneurysms, or head injuries. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) — also known as a mini-stroke — is a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain. It doesn’t cause permanent damage but acts as an early warning for possible future strokes.
Common Warning Signs (FAST Test) Face drooping – One side of the face droops or feels numb. Arm weakness – One arm drifts downward when raised. Speech difficulty – Slurred or unclear speech. Time to act – Call emergency services immediately.
Risk Factors Include: High blood pressure Smoking Diabetes High cholesterol Obesity Lack of exercise Excessive alcohol use Family history of stroke
